The designers of this kitchen wanted to
celebrate the ideals of luxury, creating a timeless
and grand space for gatherings.
Faced with typical shortcomings such as
awkward spaces and low ceilings, the team
relocated the kitchen and underpinned the
structural foundation to gain height. A furniture–
style island and refrigeration cabinetry lessen
the utilitarian feel of the kitchen and naturally
blend into the home's other living spaces.
The new space offers sumptuous materials,
such as crystal, unlacquered brass, an antique
mirror, pewter, polished stainless steel, real
silver, exotic burl, and figured woods that add to
the lushness of the space. —N.F.M.

The clients for this kitchen needed
more storage, a space conducive to
entertaining, and transitional design.
The designers responded with an
elegant kitchen that incorporates
pewter countertops, custom mosaics,
and a Spanish limestone floor. To
accommodate the clients' current needs, contractors build a
large addition: in that area Steiner–Houck and Associates
created two large islands that maximize counterspace,
inserted unique cabinetry designs, and flanked the fireplace
with pantries designed to look like antique armoires. A cast
stone range hood features a pewter fleur-de-lis detail with a
mosaic backsplash below, creating a beautiful old–world
backdrop. On the walls and ceiling, Venetian plaster distracts
from the unusual ceiling lines and provides a cohesiveness
to the overall space. —N.F.M.
