Chairmans Report
The growth of the cancer program at Kishwaukee Community Hospital is multi-faceted, and
I am honored to serve as the chair of the Cancer Committee. Last year saw the coming of a
state-of-the-art cancer center, and this year the strings are being drawn together to provide
the best quality cancer care locally.
The commitment to bring cutting-edge programs remains constant. The research program in
afliation with Loyola University Medical Center and as part of the Southwest Oncology Group
enrolled 17 oncology patients in clinical trials in 2011. Physicians in the eld of medical
oncology and radiation oncology have coordinated a comprehensive multidisciplinary lung
clinic for our lung cancer patients. Using technological advances in video-conferencing,
information including radiology is shared between the Loyola cancer team and The
Cancer Center team at Kishwaukee. Several patients through this coordination
have had advanced robotic chest surgery with the smallest of incisions. Most of
the care, including medical oncology, radiation and most cancers surgeries, are
done right here at Kishwaukee close to home and loved ones.
Care coordination has improved tremendously through patient navigators.
Surgery, medical and radiation oncology, radiology, interventional
radiology, nutrition counseling, physical therapy, massage therapy, and
superb nursing care all work hand in hand to provide individualized
patient and family-centered care. Support groups for cancer
patients are every week. A new six-week program CLIMB for
children of cancer patients, was started this year.
The annual report also highlights prostate cancer survival
by stage for patients treated at Kishwaukee and levels
that meet or exceed national statistics.
