4 WHEN IT COMES TO THE OUTDOORS IN SARANAC LAKE, IT'S NOT JUST THE QUALITY… IT'S THE QUANTITY. It can be hard to comprehend just how big the Adirondacks are: 6 million acres. Bigger than the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone and Yosemite national parks combined. And almost half of it is set aside for public use. When your base camp is Saranac Lake, pretty much any outdoor activity you can dream up is at your doorstep. Hiking, paddling, fishing, cross-country and downhill skiing, ice and rock climbing and bouldering, camping, hunting, mountain and road biking—did we miss any?—all just minutes from downtown, not to mention our skate park, which is in downtown. Once you get to the trailhead, though, civilization fades fast: Our forests, lakes and moun- tains are as vast as whatever adventure you dream up. (And if you forgot to pack something, need to rent a canoe or even want to hire a guide to take you into the backcountry, don't worry— our gear outfitters will hook you up.) Outdoor Recreation
