Carmel Chamber of Commerce 14 BY CAR: Carmel is a short 2-hour drive from San Francisco, 7 hours from Los Angeles and drivable in a day from most parts of California. BY AIR: The Monterey Regional Airport is about 10 minutes from Carmel and has direct service to and from Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Diego and San Francisco with connections worldwide. OTHER: Salinas, 17 miles east of Carmel, has AMTRAK rail service. There is a shuttle bus and taxi service from the airport and train station. Shuttle service is also available from the San Francisco and San Jose Airports to Monterey. LOCAL PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION: Monterey-Salinas Transit has 29 bus routes throughout Monterey County. There is also a bus route between the Peninsula and San Jose. Fares vary by distance and exact change is required. All buses have bike racks and wheel- chair lifts. (Locals dress in layers). The ocean temperature can be chilly. ■ Dress is usually casual and ties are seldom required. Wear comfortable walking shoes. (A city ordinance outlaws high heels!) ■ There are no street addresses. Locations are described as north or south of Ocean Avenue and on the east or west side of the street. West is always toward the beach. ■ Free parking lots are at Sunset Center (8th & Mission) and Vista Lobos (3rd & Torres). Free street parking two-hour limits are strictly enforced. Paid parking is found at Carmel Plaza. ■ Carmel has an outstanding library and visitors may obtain a temporary card for a monthly fee.
