Having lived most of my life overseas, I have discovered that individual Asian cultures share many commonalities—from the foundation of language to the way we write letters or worship the household god. While we Vietnamese have shrines for the road, river, and rice paddy, the Japanese have the ujigami shrine into which one can put a coin into a votive box and pray.
