Family Run Inn Makes for Cozy Carmel Visits T he picturesque enclave of Carmel-by-the-Sea boasts a myriad of boutique inns, B&Bs and distinctive hotels, all with their own per- sonalities and special flairs, personalized to visitors' desires. The Horizon Inn & Ocean View Lodge in Carmel-by-the Sea offers an exceptional experience, wrapped in the familiar warmth of coming home—even if it's a guest's first time visiting town. In 1978, James and Sharon Carroll and their three children relocated from Sonoma County to Carmel. They purchased the Horizon Inn & Ocean View Lodge in 1986. The Carolls' daughter, Pam, took over as gen- eral manager of the property in 1988 and never looked back. When Pam married her husband Jim Sheppard two years later, they started their own legacy at the property, spearheading a major remodel of the Horizon Inn in 1999, before purchasing it from Pam's parents a year later. For the last 16 years, Pam and Jim have worked tirelessly, continuing the tradition of a family-owned and operated business. "Carmel is my hometown," says Pam Sheppard. "I grew up here and I value the small town feel that the experiences here living have brought me. I know the town intimately and like to pass that sense of belonging to our guests whenever possible." In the mornings, every guest is greeted with a wicker picnic basket filled with savory pastries, juices, and morning comforts to start the day's adventures off on a whimsical foot. Friendly staff, who have all been with the Sheppards for five years or more, are always on hand to ensure that guests' needs are met. The Horizon Inn & Ocean View Lodge's tagline is "affordable Carmel luxury," and describes the pride the Sheppard family takes in offering an extraordinary experience at a reasonable price. Both Pam and Jim can be found working the front desk at least once a week to personally greet their loyal patrons, many of whom are repeat visitors. The Horizon Inn experience means seeing Carmel through the hearts of a family whose roots are part of the magic of the quaint paradise. The Horizon Inn is located on Junipero Street at 3rd Avenue in Carmel-by- the-Sea.
