September / October 2016 10 engine flat six vehicle known as a Corvair. You may recall one of Ralph Nader's "Unsafe at any Speed" vehicles! My brother and I drove my Dad's 1962 80 hp two speed automatic Corvair convertible to Colorado. We were attempting to traverse Independence Pass on our way to Aspen. As we neared the top of the pass, the road narrowed to a single gravel lane and another car was approaching us head on. The nearest passing point was several hundred yards behind us, so we backed down the steep stretch of no guardrail road to allow the other car to pass. As the other vehicle drove by and the driver thanked us, we attempted to resume our uphill journey. No luck! The wimpy engine and slush box transmission lacked the power to resume any forward motion whatsoever. After several failed attempts at forward motion, T riplets! Jim, Tim and Dennis all called each other one morning before breakfast to double check on what they were wearing. Nicely coordinated guys! (I am kidding of course.) You don't need a special T-shirt, just a car. We have some of the newest 911s to some of the oldest, early '70s 911 and a 912 are routinely in attendance. We typically arrive at Le Peep Restaurant, 72nd & Quivira in Lenexa, at 7:00 AM, to talk cars. Around 7:30 AM we meander in to break bread. It's a great opportunity to meet other club members, look at an ever-changing collection of Porsches, and enjoy a tasty meal. Come out a little early and chat car projects with us! We DRIVE!
