12 March 2017 Tablets & Capsules Anthony Grenier is an independent pharmaceutical consultant based in Montreal. He helps small and vir- tual companies identify the best suppliers of materials and services. He also helps them get their products to market. "They're usually very strong in their field— either in research and clinical or on product acquisi- tion—but have almost no knowledge about contract manufacturing," he said. "After unsuccessfully trying by themselves, they turn to a consultant like me and hope- fully this is before they have already selected and commit- ted to a CMO that may not be properly addressing their needs." Ben Locwin is president of Healthcare Science Advisors, Portsmouth, NH. He spends most of his time helping clients with clinical trials, especially to improve their design so they better identify safety and efficacy signals. "The goal is to make medicines more safe and efficacious when they reach the market." He also advises clients about their marketing. "There are very poor correlations between drug marketing programs and actual sales performance. So we pro- vide some nimble exper- tise where and when it's needed because it's a much more competitive space than it used to be." John McCarty worked for many years at a variety of CROs and CMOs before launching IntraTab Labs, Miami, FL, to commercialize IntraTAB, a drug delivery system he developed and patented. "It's a unique oral, transmucosal system that achieves rapid absorption and high bioavailability, even for APIs that normally don't cross the mucosal membrane. Our sublingual tablets provide rapid onset of drug action—within 5 minutes. Before, that was only achieved with injectable, nasal, or inhalation systems." The technology enables people to treat their symptoms when they occur instead of waiting hours for relief, as many oral formula- tions require. The company has licensed three products and continues to develop its lead candidates, including oral testosterone. Michael Tousey runs Techceuticals, Cleveland, OH, which provides solid dosage training and trou- bleshooting. He offers hands-on instruction in his lab- classroom and at client sites. "Someone with a tablet press might call and say they need better training for employees, and we'll give them ways to solve prob- lems. Or someone calls with a problem, and we'll help them with that but also provide training." Tousey said he can resolve most problems in few days or less. "But I don't want to be just an answer man. I want to explain how things work so that they can solve problems themselves." Chris Moreton of FinnBrit Consulting, Waltham, MA, has more than 35 years' experience as a formula- tions scientist and has been consulting for 10 years. "My focus is on the drug formulation and associated analytical methods. I also have a good understanding of the requirements for API synthesis, safety/tox testing, early clinical requirements, and regulatory issues. I also advise my clients on other issues they need to consider and recommend other con- sultants/advisors they may need to engage."
