Members' Enclosure. It is crowded in the
Members too but there is access to walk-
up grandstand seating on the day. Dress
standards in the Members are strict: jack-
ets and ties for gentlemen are the start-
ing point. You will see fashion at its best,
even top hats and morning suits, especial-
ly on Derby Day.
Many racegoers take advantage of hos-
pitality precincts. The VRC Members' Car
Park has cachet, with its elaborate car boot
picnics – in the States they call these tail-
gates. It adds to the carnival feeling. Race
sponsors have their own tent compound,
The Birdcage, with luxuries brought in
just for race week. The lavish marquee for
Emirates – sponsor of the Cup since 2004
- is a magnet for celebrities.
