Second Place / Small Bathroom Third Place / Small Bathroom S P E C I A L D A R K At only 34 square feet, this small bath in a 1941 bungalow struggled to meet both code requirements and the everyday needs of its owner. Given that two bedroom closets flanked the bathroom, designer Tanya L. Woods had room to capture space. The toilet stack was located right behind the existing toilet, so she converted that area into a hallway-accessible linen closet and relocated the new toilet directly across the room in the opposing closet. Pocket doors gave additional floor space. The design is masculine, including denim pattern-imprinted tiles in indigo and gray; a pulley theme on both the slide- bar handshower and sconces; and industrial knurling detail on the faucets and cabinet hardware. Woods calls the resulting project "Urban Elevated". —N.F.M. P U R P L E R E I G N S Designer Gladys Schanstra's clients wanted a functional basement bathroom that was an extension of the style of the newly- constructed home and reflected a modern, clean design. To meet this objective, Schanstra used a monolithic pedestal sink as a focal point and chose thin wall sconces for lighting. The simple lines also allowed the designer to use bold Italian lavender-colored porcelain tiles. Accessories such as a multi- towel holder and a freestanding toilet paper holder provide space for all the basics, maintaining the minimalist, contemporary objective. —N.F.M. Tanya L.
