US manufacturing technology orders rebounded in May MCLEAN, Va.—US manufacturing technology orders in May posted dou- ble-digit growth rates month-over- month and year-over-year, demon- strating strong and sustained growth in the sector. Overall, orders totaled $485 million in May, bringing the year-to-date totals to $2.1 billion or 26 percent higher than the first five months of 2017. This is according to the Association for Manufacturing Technology (AMT) as reported by companies participating in the US Manufacturing Technology Orders (USMTO) program. "The May rebound was largely ex- pected as April tends to be a slow month, but the 26 percent jump over 2017 shows the strength in the global markets for manufacturing technology products and places the trend line on orders above our projections from last year," said Doug Woods, AMT presi- dent. "The market does have some turbulence with tariff concerns, supply chain challenges, labor shortages, in- terest rates creeping up, and disruptive technologies shifting markets and methods. Still, for those agile and in- novative companies, these market dy- namics create a larger volume of op- portunities, and pave a pathway to continued growth." The USMTO report provides regional and national US orders data of domes- tic and imported machine tools and re- lated equipment. AMT represents and promotes US-based manufacturing technology and its members, including those who design, build, sell, and ser- vice the continuously evolving technol- ogy that lies at the heart of manufactur- ing. The USMTO report is compiled by AMT and all data in the report is based on the totals of actual data re- ported by companies participating in the USMTO program. Handbook focuses on emerging field of antimicrobial coatings DUBLIN, Ireland—Handbook of Antimicrobial Coatings is the first comprehensive work on the develop- ments being made in the emerging field of antimicrobial coatings. Cru- cial aspects associated with coating research are presented in the form of individual chapters, with particular attention given to essential aspects necessary to understand the proper- ties of novel materials. Written by Dr. Atul Tiwari, the book discusses progress being made in the field followed by an outline of applica- tions in different areas. Various meth- ods and techniques of synthesis and characterization are detailed. Chapters provide insight into the ongoing re- search, current trends, and technical challenges in this rapidly progressing field. The book is available from Re- search and Markets, an industrial mar- ket research firm. US primary aluminum production rate surveyed ARLINGTON, Va.—Based on Alu- minum Association surveys, the annual rate of US primary aluminum produc- tion totaled 864,143 metric tons (tonnes) during May 2018, an increase of 15.0 percent over the May 2017 an- nual rate of 751,488 tonnes. Com- pared to the previous month, the an- nual rate of production rose four‐ tenths of one percent over the April 2018 annual rate of 860,390 tonnes. The year‐to‐date production rate through May 2018 totaled 826,877 tonnes, up 11.9 percent over the year‐ to‐date 2017 rate of 738,726 tonnes. Actual production for the month of May 2018 totaled 73,393 tonnes. Par- ticipating companies account for 100 percent of US primary aluminum pro- duction during March 2018. Primary metals leading index analyzed RESTON, Va.—The primary metals leading index decreased to 166.3 in May from a downwardly revised 169.5 in April, and its 6-month smoothed growth rate decreased to -0.6 percent in May from a downwardly revised 3.5 percent in April. Usually, a growth rate above +1.0 percent signals an increase in metals activity, and a growth rate below -1.0 percent indicates a down- turn in activity. The primary metals leading index growth rate posted growth rates above +1.0 percent from April 2016 through April 2018, which could signal strength in primary metals industry activity; May 2018 represents a break in the trend. The May leading index should be considered prelimi- nary because only four of its eight indi- cators were available.
