Nick Liberto. June 2009, p. 11. Being a "child of the 60's," this title can have a whole different meaning from what I'm about to discuss here. This article is about loading and unloading a powder coating line to achieve maximum produc- tivity. No powder coating line, or finish- ing line for that matter, is an island unto itself. Finishing systems must be seamlessly integrated into the manufacturing process they serve. This means product must freely and efficiently flow from fabrication into finishing then to assembly. Conveyor tooling development for powder coating lines. Richard A. Dooley. October 2011, p. 22. Racking efficiency means hanging parts on a racking system designed with the ut- most line density in mind for your powder coating operation. This article discusses how you can achieve high productivity and quality powder coating on your line to save money, materials, and labor. The article explains design issues to consider for proper racking. It also discusses how prototyping and testing of racking systems can improve efficiency, and how devices such as rotators and indexers can further increase productivity. Grounding the line: Keeping hooks clean. (Rubbermaid, Jackson, Mo.) Peggy Wright. November 2011 digital issue, p. 28. Running three shifts per day and powder coating 600,000 square feet of products per week, Rubbermaid's plant in Jackson, Mo., needs to remove the powder coating that builds up on hooks quickly and eas- ily. The hooks are an integral part of the powder coating system and carry the prod- ucts through the entire line. Excessive buildup prevents good electrical contact between the hook and the conveyer, pre- venting the line from grounding properly and affecting the capability of the powder coating to bond with metal. Powder coat- ing falls to the bottom of the booth rather than adhering to parts, wasting powder. As the buildup on the hooks get bigger, a larger amount of coating bonds to them, also wasting powder. For most compa- nies, it's out with the old and in with the new. At this manufacturing plant though, its old hook-cleaning system was so efficient that it installed another sys- tem—a computerized model that makes troubleshooting a breeze. PC
