www.scottsdalecc.edu SCOTTSDALE COMMUNITY COLLEGE Admissions/Registration/Enrollment Admissions/Registration/Enrollment 155 2019-2020 CATALOG & STUDENT HANDBOOK Shared Unique Numbering (SUN) System Course Information Senate bill 1186, which passed into law in 2010, mandated the creation of a shared numbering s ystem for public college and universit y courses in Arizona to identif y courses that transfer from communit y colleges to universities toward a baccalaureate degree. The Shared Unique Number (SUN) s ystem is a college course numbering s ystem designed to help students locate and enroll in courses that have direc t equivalents for transfer among Arizona's public communit y colleges and three state universities. However, even if a course at the Maricopa Communit y Colleges is not designated as a SUN course, it may still transfer to other Arizona public institutions with a direc t equivalent as per the course equivalenc y guide on A Z TR ANSFER . COM. The SUN s ystem does not address the applicabilit y of courses. Students are encouraged to work with an Academic Advisor on course selec tions. To access a list of SUN courses, visit ht tps://w w w.az transfer.com/sun/ 2.9 Veterans Services The Maricopa Communit y Colleges ' veterans ' ser vices of f ices ac t as liaisons with the Depar tment of Veterans Af fairs. Each program must be approved by the Depar tment of Veterans Af fairs. Students may be eligible to receive educational benef its if they are registered in courses that apply to the student 's approved programs. Application forms, counseling , advisement and tutoring are available for students who are eligible for veteran's educational benef its. Students applying for veteran's educational benef its should allow eight to ten weeks before receiving benef its. The amount of benef its awarded is determined by the Depar tment of Veterans Af fairs, and is based on the number of credit hours or clock hours for which a student is enrolled and the leng th of enrollment period for each course. It is the student 's responsibilit y to notif y the of f ice that ser ves veterans at their campus regarding any change in enrollment, address, program of study, enrollment at another institution, or any other change that may impac t their veteran's educational benef its. Those students receiving benef its must follow the VA academic progress polic y to continue to receive benef its. Academic Progress Policy for Students Receiving Veteran's Educational Benefits Depar tment of Veterans Af fairs regulations require that all persons using any t ype of veteran educational assistance program make satisfac tor y academic progress toward achievement of their educational objec tive (program of study). A student who does not meet the minimum standards of 2.0 upon completion of 12 or more credit hours will be placed on probation, at which point the student will have no more than t wo semesters in which to improve academic standing to acceptable. At this point, if satisfac tor y academic progress has not been demonstrated, veteran educational benef its will be terminated. Benef its may be resumed when the student raises the cumulative grade point average to the required minimum standards or demonstrates the abilit y to meet these standards through the approval of a written appeal. Distance Learning The course content and competencies for distance learning classes are the same as courses of fered in-person or in a hybrid format. The courses of fered in this format lead to completion of MCCCD degrees and/or cer tif icates of completion. Colleges use Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Canvas and RioLearn for online of ferings. These por tals are used for both hybrid and online classes. Students must use their Maricopa Enterprise ID and pass word to access the por tal. The link to the por tal is provided on the college home page and on my.maricopa.edu, the distric t 's website for student access to Maricopa tools. Maricopa-assigned student e-mail addresses are used for communicating with students within the tools. Students are also able to communicate with the instruc tor through the LMS, via Maricopa e-mail or by phone.
