Gilead begins trial of
inhaled remdesivir for
less-severe COVID-19

NIA—Fierce Pharma reported
that Gilead Sciences has begun a
phase 1b trial in 60 healthy vol-
unteers in the United States to
evaluate the safety of a nebulized,
inhaled solution of remdesivir for
treatment of COVID-19. While
remdesivir is currently adminis-
tered intravenously, it is hoped an
inhaled formulation could be used
for outpatients with less severe
disease and that early treatment
could help avoid hospitalization,
decrease systemic exposure and
produce fewer side effects. How-
ever, Fierce Pharma indicated that a
GlobalData analyst noted that the
inhaled formulation has its own
hurdles, including cost and practi-
cality. Gilead did not immediately
respond to a Fierce Pharma request
for clari cation about whether the
inhaled version could be self-ad-
ministered by patients or would
require a doctor's supervision.
