RETAILOBSERVER.COM MAY 2021 12 SECOND PLACE / LARGE CONTEMPORARY BATH Blue Arnold, CMKBD, Owner, Kitchens by Request Jarrettsville, MD Mosaic – I set out to create a contemporary master bathroom with unexpected visually appealing materials while defining a luxury bathing experience. In order to maximize the view out of the window, the freestanding tub uses only a ceiling-mounted laminar faucet with which to fill it. Further, to enhance the view while providing privacy, an automated shade was used that opens from the floor up to the upper window jamb. To the right, the double bowl vanity cabinetry with optic white glass top drawers and quilted white leather lower drawers is suspended between a pair of Makassar ebony linen cabinets that are finished in a hand-buffed polyester to a brilliant mirror finish. To maximize counter space and to create a clean aesthetic, the high marble splash which houses the wall mount faucets is built out to 4" deep. This creates a convenient ledge in which to set necessary grooming supplies while using the sinks. The medicine cabinets with guillotine doors use a large single mirror that glides upward, avoiding a hinged door. An additional wall mount mirror sits above the medicine cabinets and continues to the ceiling, creating a huge reflecting mirror that showcases the opposite wall and the large walk-in curbless shower. On the shower's back wall, and evident in the mirror reflection, a custom mosaic of a female bust set against black mosaic tile is an unexpected design element. While in the shower, a digital showering system eliminates all volume controls and shower valves, offering a beautifully sparse shower interior with only the water delivery devices protruding from the black mosaic tile side walls and ceiling. A shower seat of the same marble as the vanity top enables a spa-like experience of a rain or steam shower, all while listening to music through waterproof speakers. The bidet function toilet – in a separate water closet complete with additional storage cabinetry – enforces the clean aesthetic and contemporary appeal of this master bathroom.
