Q: How doe s you r c o m p a n y v i e w machinery lubrication in terms of importance a nd overa ll business strategy? A: Lubrication is the life- blood of the equipment. It is one of the building block s to optimizing e qu ipment l i fe a nd performance that will directly affect the bottom line. ere are many cases that warrant the need for a flagship lubricant, but proper lubrication is determined more by oil analysis, lubrication frequency, vibration anal- ysis, and then doing what is right for the equipment and the plant as a whole. Q: W hat do you see as some of the more important trends taking place in the lubrication and oil analysis field? A: In the lubrication world: improved eff i- ciency gains and extended oil life or even recovery and reuse. In the oil analysis world: improved varnish detection, real- time oil analysis and real-time asset manage- ment where oil analysis can generate work orders based on programming alert limits. Avoiding Contamination in Dirty Environments Machines operating in an extremely dirty environ- ment, such as in a forge or foundry, require extra care to prevent contamination. Try to keep the equipment sealed and avoid unnecessary opening of the reser- voirs. Install quick disconnects in tanks and on fill vessels for filling or topping up hydraulic tanks. Add mainstream sampling taps on all equipment. is will result in a true indication of the oil's condition, avoiding any bottom sampling. New Grease Gun Caution Before installing grease into a new grease gun, consider disassembling the gun and cleaning it thoroughly. Metal shavings have been found in new grease guns. ese metal shavings appear to be from the manufacturing process of the grease gun. Preventive Measures Make Sense Catastrophic pump failure on circulating and hydraulic systems can damage more than just the pump. Consider using oil strainers or filters upstream of all equipment components to prevent pump failure debris from damaging these machines. is is also important for kidney-loop systems with expensive heaters and oil/water separators.
