The owners of this 1913 home
desired a total reimagining of their
beautiful Craftsman, which had
layers of paint and some deferred
maintenance. A key design element
was changing traffic patterns to
increase function, resulting in a
new stairwell and gorgeous,
detailed stained cabinetry – features
that set the tone for the rest of the
home from the moment you walk in.

The existing fireplace in this house didn't match the scale or style of the
room. The client requested a new fireplace and mantel with Arts and Crafts and
Mission elements, including a surround and hearth that feature handmade
Motawi tile. Quarter-sawn oak was hand-selected for character and custom
made into lovely mantel pieces, including gently arched legs routed-out with
graceful fluting: typical of the Mission style. Quarter- sawn 10½ -feet-tall oak
paneling above the custom mantle fills the wall space, bringing warmth and
balance. The new fireplace ties the other elements in the space together and
fits the room's high ceiling.
