Editor's Note CEO: Elliot H. Clark Elliot.Clark@SharedXpertise.com Editorial Director: Bill Hatton Bill.Hatton@SharedXpertise.com Leaping Forward Have you ever wished you had a crystal ball to predict the future? Being a bit more type A myself, I long for order, planning, and to know what will happen next. That being the case, I've admittedly gone to a psychic to hear what the future holds. It was eons ago, and the only memorable take-away: I would be famous someday. As I continue to wait for that day to come, HRO Today's approach to the crystal ball is more rooted in research then ESP. So who better to turn to for our 2014 forecast than those in the industry who provide analysis for a living? Jessica Miller-Merrell, CEO of Xceptional HR, Josh Bersin, principal and founder of Bersin by Deloitte, Matt Charney, managing editor of recruitingblogs.com and recruitingdaily.com, and Sarah White, founder and strategic advisor of Accelir, offer some powerful insight. They report that technological advances—video, mobile, social, and big data—are leading the way to obtaining and retaining top talent. HR needs to hold on tight and not let go in order to get ahead. See Full Speed Ahead on page 10 for more. You'll find another crystal-ball reading of sorts in RPO on Target (see page 34), a compilation of RPO trends set to make an impact. Everest Group reports that the global RPO market is projected to increase between 12 and 17 percent—and that growth may be driven by the 500 or so deals coming up for renewal. HR executives should expect more from their engagements as the industry has evolved into RPO 2.0. The rise of talent communities, a focus on organizational culture, employment branding, and data integration are just a few things to expect next year. This issue also prepares you for things that you can't predict—unless you take action. Associate Editor Audrey Roth's piece Employees Behaving Badly? examines why organizations are starting to consider re-screening their employees. The majority of companies—69 percent according to SHRM—conduct background checks prior to hiring. But as Ken Monroe of Background Investigations Bureau says, "A background check is a snapshot of data in time. And a great deal can occur between this snapshot and present day." As Roth reports, it is a smart way to mitigate risk and increase workforce safety. Find out additional reasons to implement, as well as some best practices to consider on page 56. It's also that time of year when we recognize the best and brightest in the industry— leaders whose vision for HR is shaping the marketplace into 2014. Leading the Pack (see page 20) is a directory of more than 100 Superstars. We highlight both practitioners, providers, and advisors/analysts—all important factors in the HR equation. As this year comes to a close and we leap forward into 2014, is there something you'd like to see in these pages? Feel free to send your ideas and comments my way (Debbie.Bolla@SharedXpertise.com).
