Scandinavia's oldest capital city boasts a sophisticated lifestyle, with a blend of 19th and 20th century buildings, with the surrounding countryside a paradise for lovers of winter sports. Enjoy the remainder of the day free to explore the city. Overnight Stay: Oslo Day 16 Oslo – Spitsbergen (FB,D) Transfer to the airport this morning for your fl ight to Spitsbergen, the largest island in the Svalbard archipelago (fl ight not included). Arriving in the largest settlement, Longyearbyen, embark on your Poseidon Expedition ship, the Sea Spirit and settle into your cabin. As we set sail out of Isfjorden, keep an eye out for our fi rst whale! Day 17 Ny Alesund – Krossfjorden Glacier (FB,L,D) Today we visit the most northerly settlement in the world, Ny Alesund. Founded in 1917 by a mining company, the town now acts as the centre for Arctic exploration. Later, as the ship enters the picturesque Krossfjorden, we board small Zodiac launch boats for a mid-afternoon adventure along the Glacier. Blue ice is fl anked by green slopes with a variety of colourful fl owers, with bird colonies and other animals such as Arctic foxes in view. Polar bears are often spotted searching for walrus or seals. Day 18-19 Greenland Sea (FB,L,D) x 2 Leaving Svalbard behind, we sail across the Greenland Sea. Although much of your cruise is in calm waters, The Sea Spirit is perfectly equipped to handle larger swells with a set of retractable fi n stabilizers. During your free time on board, Poseidon host a series of lectures and presentations on the wildlife and geography, often with invited speakers. There is also a gym on board and a relaxing lounge to complement the restaurant. Day 20 Northeast Greenland National Park (FB,L,D) This morning we take a walk along the lush Arctic tundra at Myggbukta, the former whaling station where the Norwegians hunted for polar bears and Arctic foxes. Now populated by musk oxen and Arctic hares, the small streams and lakes are also home to geese. Later our ship enters the Kejser Franz Josef Fjord, framed by towering mountains. Huge icebergs which Greenland is known for, make this fjord unique, and encounters with Narwhals are frequently enjoyed. Day 21 Blomsterbugten – Antarctic Sund (FB,L,D) This morning our ship drops anchor by Ymer Island where we witness the Blomsterbugten, or 'bay of fl owers', known for its striking sedimentary rock Visit the town of Ittoqqortoormiit Please see page 44 – 45 for full River Cruise itinerary Day 1 Budapest (Embarkation) Day 2 Budapest Day 3 Bratislava Day 4 Vienna Day 5 Durnstein – Melk Day 6 Passau Day 7 Kelheim / Regensburg Day 8 Nuremberg Day 9 Bamberg Day 10 Wurzburg Day 11 Miltenberg Day 12 Rhine Gorge / Rudesheim Day 13 Cologne Day 14 Amsterdam Splendours of Europe River Cruise
