NAHB's 2012 International Builders' Show offers some signs of better things ahead. Nana Wall introduced the SL73 Miami Dade/AAMA Hurri- cane Folding Glass System for large openings. It makes hurricane protection available for mid-rise buildings with custom panels up to 10 feet tall. The system has been tested to Miami- Dade protocols for large missile impact; structural pressure, air, water, and forced entry; and cyclic pressure. It also offers security and energy efficiency. Tapco Group offered several products including its new Wellcraft well covers, which resist unwanted movement at hur- ricane-rated wind speeds, yet are fast and simple to pop open from the outside or inside. Well covers provide additional pro- tection by preventing children, pets, small animals and debris from accidentally falling in the well. Covers are made from a very strong, clear polycarbonate material that has a 500 pound load limit while allowing unfiltered sunlight in to brighten basements. BASF announced that its closed-cell spray polyurethane foam products have received hurricane-zone approval from the Miami-Dade County Building and Neighborhood Compliance (BNC) Department. Tests and engineering evaluations of Com- fort Foam® and Spraytite® (178 series) applied at roofing trusses increased the wind uplift resistance of a traditional code- approved home roof by more than 200 percent. Submission of this test data to the Miami-Dade County BNC office resulted in the first Notice of Acceptance (NOA) for this application with approval for use in High Velocity Hurricane Zones. Also at the Show The 2012 IBS featured exhibits from more than 900 suppli- ers representing all facets of the home building industry and the latest product innovations. Builders and remodelers also attended more than 165 educational sessions on design trends, green building, marketing, remodeling and other building industry topics to learn new ideas and sharpen their skills. Nearly 2,500 people attended a special address by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, during which he discussed how restraints on credit for homebuyers and homebuilders alike continue to impede the housing and economic recovery. Other highlights of the show included The New American Home 2012, NAHB's official show home, and the IBS Opening Ceremonies featuring magicians Penn & Teller as keynote speak- ers, and Aron Ralston, whose inspiring story of bravery was made famous in the acclaimed movie "127 Hours." The 2013 International Builders' Show moves out of hurricane territory and heads to Las Vegas, NV. The show will be held January 22 to 24 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Registration will open on September 1, 2012. Smart Vent flood vents are ICC-ES evaluated, FEMA-accepted and approved by the Florida Building Code Commission. They allow floodwater to auto- matically enter and exit through the frame opening, relieving the pressure off foundation walls. Wellcraft well covers from Tapco Group resist unwanted movement at hurricane-rated wind speeds, yet are fast and simple to pop open from the outside or inside. 2012 DIRECTORY & RESOURCE GUIDE / STORM&SeCuRITy PROTeCTION 11
