Payroll Multinational organisations, on the other hand, have different needs, which tend to be more complex and better suited for some of the newer Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solutions, says Ceridian's Laird. In-country solutions might be limited. "Selecting in-country solutions alone provides limited value to the headquarters of multinational organisations which are seeking visibility into spending control, and central governance," agrees Verrone. "As more organisations expand their operations internationally, it is inevitable that they will look to partner with a global payroll provider who has the experience, technology platforms, and local expertise to help them achieve consistent and compliant processes across their organisation." A partnership approach is another solution that finds itself somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. "Local presence is an important factor when it comes to payroll and HR. That's why SD Worx choose not to build their own offices in each European country, but founded together with Aditro the Payroll Services Alliance," says Jan Van Mol, international business partner of marketing and communication for SD Worx. "Together with six strategic partners, we cover Europe together. Each partner is a leading expert in their own countries, which makes of the Payroll Services Alliance an extremely strong expert network where clients know that their payroll is taken care of by local experts in a European framework." The partnership is made up of Aditro, Cintra, Elanor, SD Worx, Seresco, and Trianon. Looking Ahead NelsonHall forecasts growth in the global payroll outsourcing market. Its research shows that in 2011 the industry was valued at $13.1 billion and will increase to $15.8 billion by 2016. What will push this growth forward? • Value-add services. "Increasingly, companies are looking for value-add services and analytics tools that allow them to operate more competitively and have a better view of their resource pool in an ever-changing business landscape," notes Sutcliffe. "This is challenging traditional in-house HR and payroll functions, as it is becoming more difficult to show the added value in these areas." Continuing process integration to enable the exchange of real-time data will allows buyers to see information in an up-to-date format. Enhanced dashboard visibility and capability will improve payroll's reporting metrics. • Technology. SaaS solutions are a key to the future of outsourcing payroll. "A cloud-based, multi-tenanted solution can support rapid growth and headcount changes and also protect against future costs and disruption caused by platform upgrades or shifting legislation," explains Verrone. "A SaaS-based technology platform delivers organisations a common process and consistent tool set that enables them to quickly deploy the solution as it expands into new geographies or gains new requirements." • Tapping into emerging markets. Gartner's survey reports a few growth areas—Latin America, Asia Pacific—but success may be determined by how vendors approach the market. Strategic partnerships are one option. "There are also a growing number of highly professional, regionally based payroll companies in Latin America and Asia Pacific, and we would expect to see interesting alliances formed over the coming years as the global market develops and consolidates," notes Laird.
