Tablets & Capsules May 2018 33 Pin mill CIM-18-S316 pin mill (or centrifugal impact mill) grinds friable powders, flakes, and granules into course or fine par- ticles as small as 400 mesh. Outer and inner discs swing away from the unit on cantilevered arms, providing full access to both sides of both discs as well as the mill housing for rapid cleaning and sanitizing. High-speed rotation of the inner disc creates a centrifugal force that accelerates bulk material entering the central inlet of the opposing sta- tionary disc. As material travels at high speeds from the center to the periphery of the discs, it passes through five intermeshing rows of rotating and stationary pins. Infinitely variable-speed rotor rotates at up to 5,400 rpm. Munson Machinery, Utica, NY 315 797 0090 www.munsonmachinery.com Segregation analyzer SpecTester segregation analyzer measures sample blends containing up to six unique components and reports how much and why the material is segregating. Unit also identifies component concentrations, particle size differences, product uniformity, and four specific segregation mechanisms that may be occurring during processing. Analyzer is suitable for use in R&D facilities and can assess a formulation's risk of API concentration fluctuation, shortening a product's time to market. Unit provides real-time quality control in production plants, eliminating plant downtime due to off-spec API concentrations. Material Flow Solutions, Gainesville, FL 352 379 8879 www.matflowsol.com A survey of what's available particle size: reduction, separation, and analysis Cone mill Sanitary cone mill performs gentle, low-energy size reduc- tion and achieves even particle size distributions with mini- mal fines. Unit de-agglomerates dried or hygroscopic mate- rials; reduces the particle size of wet materials to improve drying and granulation before tableting; and regrinds out- of-spec tablets for reintroduction to the tableting process. Impeller accelerates material centrifugally against and through apertures in the unit's conical screen. Screens change quickly and are offered with apertures as small as 150 microns. Stainless-steel mill can be cleaned wet or dry and is available in CIP and SIP configurations. Other options include top, bottom, and remote drives; high-con- tainment and glove box designs; special alloy construction; and mobile designs. Kason, Millburn, NJ 973 467 8140 www.kason.com
