Inquiry eHelp 1 Introduce Tap Prior Knowledge •Ask: ¿Cómo obtienen ustedes energía? (from the food I eat) Guide students to discuss how different plants and animals get energy, and the difference between producers and consumers. Connect to the Big Idea •Review the Big Idea Question, How does energy move in an ecosystem? Explain to students that this inquiry will demonstrate how energy is passed from the sun to living things in an ecosystem. •Have students open their Science Inquiry and Writing Books to page 30. Read the Question and invite students to share ideas about the transfer of energy in an ecosystem. 2 Build Vocabulary Science Process Words:  observar ,  clasificar  Use this routine to introduce the words. 1.Pronounce the Word  Say  clasificar . Have students repeat it in syllables. 2.Explain Its Meaning  Choral read the sentence. Ask students for another word or phrase that means the same as  clasificar . (to group things according to their characteristics) 3.Encourage Elaboration  Ask: ¿Cómo puedo  clasificar  distintos tipos de libros? (I can classify books by their covers, size, or content.) Vocabulary Support Have students use the word  classify  in a sentence. Ask students to  classify  the different items in their desk or in the classroom using their characteristics. Teaching Tips •If necessary, store-bought lettuce can be used. In this case, guide students in making the connection between the store-bought lettuce and lettuce grown from seeds. •Remind students not to touch the pill bugs and to handle them gently. Have students wash their hands after handling the pill bugs. What to Expect Students should observe that the lettuce grows because it makes its own food using energy from the sun. The pill bugs get their energy by eating the lettuce. Energy from the sun is transformed into chemical energy in the lettuce. Chemical energy in the lettuce is transferred to the pill bugs. Repeat for the word  observe . To encourage elaboration, ask: What senses can you use to  observe  an insect? (sight, touch, and hearing) 3 Guide the Investigation •Distribute materials. Read the steps on pages 31–32. Clarify steps as necessary. •Review that producers make their own food using energy from the sun and consumers eat other organisms to get energy. Ask students to give an example of a producer and a consumer. Life Science T101f
