Lesson

Directed Inquiry
5
Objectives
Students will be able to:
• Investigate through Directed Inquiry (answer
a question; make and compare observations;
collect and record data and observations;
generate explanations and conclusions based
on evidence; share findings; ask questions
based on observations to increase
understanding).
• Describe the role of producers in the
transformation of energy as sunlight changes
to chemical energy through photosynthesis.
• Explain how almost all kinds of animal food
can be traced back to plants.
• Distinguish between producers, such as
plants that use sunlight to make their own
food, and consumers, such as animals that
consume energy-rich food.
• Collect quantitative and qualitative
information, record it in charts or diagrams,
and use it as support for reasonable
explanations.

T101e Directed Inquiry
•Use the live materials coupon to order the pill
bugs in advance. Allow 2–3 weeks for delivery.
•Prepare a plastic cup ¾ full of soil for each
group. Lettuce will need to be grown 2–3
