Inquiry eHelp Introduce, continued Connect to the Big Idea •Review the Big Idea Question, How does energy move in an ecosystem? Explain to students that in this inquiry they will explore how mold gets its energy. •Have students open their Science Inquiry and Writing Books to page 34. Read the Question and invite students to share ideas about where mold gets energy to live and grow. 2 Build Vocabulary Science Process Words:  comparar ,  inferir  Use this routine to introduce the words. 1.Pronounce the Word  Say  comparar . Have students repeat it in syllables. 2.Explain Its Meaning  Choral read the sentence. Ask students for another word or phrase that means the same as  comparar . (tell how things are alike and different) 3.Encourage Elaboration   Comparen  una manzana y una naranja. ¿En qué se parecen y en qué se diferencian? (Both are fruit, but they have different colors, textures, and tastes.) Vocabulary Support Give students an example of a  comparison  of centimeters and inches. Remind them that centimeters and inches are both units of measurement. Inches are larger than centimeters. Ask students to  compare  a marker and a pencil using both units. Repeat for the word  infer . To encourage elaboration, ask: What do you use when you  infer  something? (what I know and what I observe) Teaching Tips •Use fruits and vegetables without preservatives for better results. •Students should wash their hands after handling the fruit. 3 Guide the Investigation •After the investigation, dispose of the sealed bags in the garbage. •Distribute materials. Read the inquiry steps on pages 34–35 together with students. Move from group to group and clarify steps as necessary. What to Expect •Throughout the investigation, remind students not to open the bags. • If mold has not formed after 1 week, extend the investigation accordingly. Students will observe that mold grows on fruit in dark, damp conditions. They will also see that the amount of mold increases each day, while the amount of fruit decreases. •Remind students to handle the bag carefully so they do not crush the mold or the fruit.
