Focus on the Big Idea, continued •With student input, post a chart that displays the chapter headings. Have students orally share what they expect to find in each section. Then read page 102 aloud. ¿Cómo se mueve la energía en un ecosistema? Productores y consumidores Herbívoros, carnívoros y omnívoros Descomponedores Cadenas alimenticias y redes alimenticias 3 Teach Vocabulary Have students look at pages 104–105, and use this routine to teach each word. For example: 1.Pronounce the Word  Say  clorofila  and have students repeat it. 2.Explain Its Meaning  Read the word, definition, and sample sentence, and use the photo to explain the word's meaning. Point out the trees in the photo. Say: ¿Dónde creen que encuentran la  clorofila  en estos árboles? (in the leaves) ¿Por qué creen que es así? (Chlorophyll is green, and the leaves are green.) Name 3.Encourage Elaboration  Have students look carefully at the other photos on pages 104 and 105. Ask: ¿Dónde más habría  clorofila ? (Students should identify green leaves in grass, sagebrush, and other plants.) Date Chapter 3 Science Vocabulary Circle the word that correctly completes the sentence. 1. A (food chain, photosynthesis) is a process by which energy passes from one living thing to another. 2. The green material in plants that absorbs sunlight is (chlorophyll, photosynthesis). chlorophyll food chain food web photosynthesis 3. A (food chain, food web) shows how energy moves among many producers and consumers in an ecosystem. 4. Green plants make food from the energy from sunlight in the process of (chlorophyll, photosynthesis). Write a caption for the picture. Use two vocabulary words. photosynthesis to make food. 42 •¿Cuál es el propósito  fotosíntesis  en las plantas? (making food) •¿En qué se parecen las  cadenas  alimenticias  y las  redes alimenticias ? ¿En qué se diferencian? (They both involve a flow of energy. Food chains show the flow of energy from one organism to the next, while food webs combine food chains to show how energy moves through the whole ecosystem.) The leaves of green plants have chlorophyll. This lets them use Learning Master Learning Master 42 or at  myNGconnect.com Repeat for the words  fotosíntesis ,  cadena  alimenticia , and  red alimenticia  using the following Elaboration Prompts: Life Science © NGSP & HB NGSL_LM_LS_G5.indd 42 5/21/10 2:12:27 PM Life Science  T104–T105
