Sewing Threads Together – Education, Support and Giving Back Our community represents the threads holding our quilt together and PHS believes in giving back to the community, not only through scholarships and funding, but through education, initiation and support. With the tight bonds and relationships of those surrounding us, we are able to create an environment of trust, health and companionship. Programs, such as our Spirit of Women initiative, educate and involve women in health events and programs. Our Spirit Girls program aims to do the same, creating a new generation of health conscious, caring and empowered eighth grade young ladies in Monroe County. VIDEO: Anna Vanchieri, proud graduate of the Spirit Girls program, speaks about her experience and why other young ladies should join. Helping create a brighter present and future for the community is the Nurse Family Partnership. Specially trained nurses in prenatal and infant care aid expectant mothers in their own homes. From early pregnancy through two years of age, the Nurse Family Partnership nurses create an environment of reliance, love and comfort. To continue the bonds we have in the community, PHS also offers medical support services for events such as the 2012 Ironman 70.3 competition, which is attended by thousands and supports local businesses, and the Run for Red Marathon benefitting the American Red Cross of the Poconos. Looking towards the future PHS is launching the Pocono Health Portal; a community health portal designed to keep members of Monroe County connected to each other, local organizations, as well as track their own health through this interactive website. The portal was made possible by our Community Health Connections initiative, which carries on our vision of a healthier community by assessing what it needs most. Launched in June, our Healthy Menu Initiative was also a program brought to fruition from our Community Health Connections. Held at the Restaurant at Stroudsmoor Country Inn, guests were treated to an interactive evening of healthy foods and presentations on healthy living. 9 POCONO HEALTH SYSTEM • FISCAL YEAR 2013 ANNUAL REPORT
