Chapman took the job in 1957 and was afforded the chance to hire a secretary four years later. JoAnn needed a job because her math-teaching husband Howard needed to complete his doctorate at the University of Tennessee aſter years of taking courses when his schedule allowed. "I was going to do an early leave of absence for a very small stipend," recalled Howard, a 1953 alumnus who had joined the faculty the same year Chapman took on the alumni role. "In or- der for us to do that, JoAnn was looking for some employment." "There was an alphabetical card, a card for the area where they lived, and then a card that told what they did. So, each time, if they made a change, then that meant I had three cards that I had to make all the corrections on, each time." A fourth set would be added by the end of the decade; it con- sisted of metal addressograph plates that were arranged by zip code. Chapman moved to the classroom full-time in 1963. He was followed by Howard Cobble '56 and, later, by Stuart Watson '39. Chitwood family photo
