J. Randall O'Brien There is no place like Carson-Newman or 160 years Carson-Newman f has nurtured students in discov- ering a higher purpose for their lives. Historically, our students are among the brightest and best in the nation, receiving acclaim for aca- demic, athletic and service achieve- ments. Undergirded by a world- class faculty who love students, it is no wonder our students aspire to promising callings and meaningful lives aſter their years of study. Most in the Carson-Newman family are engaged in service to others, sacrificially giving of their time, en- ergy and resources in putting their faith into practice to impact the world for Christ. The Carson-Newman tradition is alive and well! Whether helping to repair a home, taking food to a shut-in, mentoring in an af- terschool program, assisting with disaster relief, min- istering in an orphanage or refugee camp, our students live up to the call of the great commission of our Lord, while excelling in the classroom. It has been that way from the beginning. Built upon the character of founders who sought to create a school for education, transformation, and aspiration, the Christian ideal of serving others has always been woven into the fabric of our educational mission. So we are rightfully proud that this year Carson-Newman was once again nationally recognized for commit- ment to service; ranking number one in the nation in the "community service" category and second in the "overall" ranking among all colleges and universities in America! (see page 3) Awards and recognitions tell us only what we've long known, that Carson-Newman students are extraordi- nary young men and women who are worthy of our very best; our best teaching; our best counsel; our fin- est prayers; and our most charitable giving. In the past year the best of the Carson-Newman family has been on display. 6 JOURNEY fall 2011 Our forensics team won their fiſth state title, and third straight national championship among Christian colleges. Several students participated in meaning- ful study abroad and exchange programs. Students participated in record numbers in the fall and spring break mission trips, as well as the Operation Inasmuch service day. Most notably, student surveys show that 69% of our students participate in service and ministry efforts every week. Every week! You will find profiles for some of our students on page 21 that tell how Car- son-Newman has helped them discover that there is "more to life." As in years past Carson-Newman is again recognized by U. S. News & World Report, Forbes, The Princeton Review, and others for the strength of our academics. You will find an article about a significant and long running, faculty/student research partnership on page 26 which is just one example of the dedication of our outstanding faculty. Sacrificial giving has made an immediate and cru- cial impact on the school's finances, the beauty of our buildings and grounds, and much needed improve- ments to our residence halls and student areas. You will find profiles of some of our recent donor honorees on the following page sharing why they chose to sup- port Carson-Newman with their giſts. May I thank you for your commitment to the endur- ing legacy of this great College and her noble mission? Would you please be so kind as to remember Carson- Newman in your year-end charitable giving? Your generous giſt, large or small, profoundly impacts our students' educational experience. And as you know, your giſt does not end with students today; it will be multiplied in their lives, and in the lives they touch, throughout the years, throughout the world. Thank you for making a difference!
