One of the basic principles which guide archaeologists as they dig is a very simple dictum:
"Move from the known to the unknown." That is, move deliberately and carefully in your digging,
expanding your excavation from what you can see toward what is yet to be discovered.
Don't just plunge in anywhere
and start removing soil and rocks! Work slowly and thoughtfully with few prior conclusions. Keep an open mind that is always curious and generating questions. Be prepared to find new things and to have your old expectations changed by what actually comes to light.
Expect the unexpected.
