Admissions: C-N offers "More" This semester the Admissions Office rolled out C-N's new recruiting material..xxThemed "More to Life," the campaign is comprised of several pieces that explain how a degree from Carson-Newman offers students "more." The new material has companion videos, featuring students from areas of accounting, graphic design & literature, history & political science, music, religion, and human services majors. The More to Life campaign was a collaborative effort between C-N and Details Communications. music associate at Decatur, Georgia's Briarlake Baptist Church until her 2002 retirement. From her retirement until her passing last year, she was a member of Smoke Rise Baptist Church, located in Stone Mountain, Georgia, where she sang in the choir, served as a deacon and substituted at the organ when needed. A Cappella releases three CDs A Cappella Choir has released three compact discs that capture several iterations of the group over the last decade. Produced by Dr. Eric Thorson, director of the ensemble, the collection offers more than three hours of music presented during the choir's annual spring concerts. A superhero (book) to the rescue C-N's Dr. Richard Gray coedited The 21st Century Superhero: Essays on Gender, Genre and Globalization in Film (McFarland Press) which examines certain changes that occurred in film since 9/11. The associate professor of French says the idea took shape when discussion with a colleague, Dr. Betty Kaklamanidou, moved to the superhero film genre and the impact made on society by the WTC/Pentagon attacks. The collaborators settled on 10 essays that reflect international perspectives of its contributors who come from the United States as well as England, Germany and Greece. Gray notes that he is pleased that all that time spent as a kid watching Superfriends paid off in ways he could not have known. Alumna's estate gift helps educate worship leaders An estate gift by the late Nancy Jane Blair of over $500,000 is significantly impacting the Carson-Newman music department and its students. Through the generosity of the 1959 alumna, the department was able to purchase 14 new Steinway pianos, refurbish four others as well as three organs, and provide Tarr Music Center with its first Smartboard- equipped classroom. A Knoxville native who grew up in Oneida, Blair graduated from Carson-Newman with a BA in music education and earned a master's degree in church music from a Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. She invested 40 years in leading worship, first as minister of music at the First Baptist Church of Osceola, Arkansas, and then as organist- 4 JOURNEY fall 2011 The discs, Live in Concert, Hymns of Faith and Sempre compiled Voce from were spring concerts at First Baptist Church of Jefferson City and represent the best of the best in terms of musicality, tone and production. New head coaches named to basketball and soccer programs The Carson-Newman Athletic Department announced the hiring of two new head coaches this year. Mike Mincey was named the women's basketball coach having served as assistant coach the last three seasons, helping the Lady Eagles to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2009 and 2010. Prior to C-N, he was assistant coach at Division I East Tennessee University and head coach at Conway Christian School in South Carolina. While at Conway he was named Coach of the Year in both basketball and baseball by the South Carolina Association of Christian Schools. Mincey is married to C-N head volleyball coach Shannon Mincey. Carson-Newman tapped 2006 alumnus Richard Moodie as head men's soccer coach. Moodie returned to C-N after serving as head coach at Morristown East High School. A native of Stenhousemuir, Scotland, Moodie played for the Eagles, helping his team capture the first of three SAC titles (2003-05). He was also named first team All-South Atlantic Conference in 2005. He served as graduate assistant under former head coach Allen Vital from 2006-2008.
