16 Several times during the year, the Center also offers ranger-led programs to some of the earthworks. Experience the birthplace for freedom for many slaves at the Corinth Contraband Camp. The camp was home to many African-Americans, who fled Southern planta- tions and farms seeking the freedom and protection found in Federally-occupied Corinth. Leaders understood what effect the defection of thousands of African-Americans would have on the Confederate effort. They began to enlist the escaped slaves as teamsters, cooks and laborers. The male refugees were also armed and placed in charge of security details and eventually were allowed to serve as soldiers in the Federal Army. The Contraband Camp resembled a small town, complete with a church, commissary, hospital, frame and log houses, and a named and numbered street grid. The American Missionary Association School also operated at the Camp giving students of all ages the opportunity to obtain an education for the very first time. Today, a portion of the original camp is part of the National Park Service, and it features life-size bronze figures, depicting the lives of people considered contrabands of war, set upon a ¼ mile walking path. Only a short distance from the Contraband Camp is the Corinth National Cemetery, which is the final resting place for 1,793 known and 3,895 unknown Federal soldiers representing 273 regiments and 15 states. Also interred in the Cemetery are veterans and spouses from World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. During the tour, see the sixteen most important square feet in the Confederacy in 1862 at the Historic Corinth Depot, which is home to the Crossroads Museum. This local history venue tells stories of the area from Paleo- zoic fossils and Chickasaw artifacts to railroad memorabilia and Civil War relics. The Museum features special exhibit galleries, which showcases local art, photographs and never seen before items from the permanent collection. The Museum is also the home to the Coca-Cola Museum. This extensive collection features interactive stations showcasing years of jingles and television advertisements. Just a step outside the Museum is the famous rail cross- ings…the crossover point of the historic Memphis & Charleston and Mobile & Ohio Railroads. This crossing was the catalyst for Corinth's existence as well as its stra- tegic military position during the Civil War. Don't miss the red caboose, a favorite of all visitors, which is open the same hours as the Museum. ZAXBY'S ® CHECK US OUT.
