Surprisingly, an errant word or a misspell- ing has scuttled many a best-laid plan. Another reason to use a professional designer is that they spend their working hours testing and proving what colors, shapes, placements and nuances of design will best serve their customer's desires. They can create an aesthetic that will interest customers and ultimately motivate them to get it. It may seem like an intangible thing, but it can be rather striking to compare the DIY design of a great coffee roaster with the professional design of a great graphic designer. There's just something about the professional design that looks cleaner, better, and more attractive. As a layman, it may be difficult to put your finger on what it is that makes the difference, but you sure do know it when you see it. The final reason for using a profession- al designer to help create packaging is they can provide great examples and inspira- tion. An experienced designer of packaging will have examples of previous work and other packages available in the public space to show clients in order to get their creative juices flowing. Many roasters have a sense for what they want the package to look like and they know what message they want their packaging to say, but they aren't sure what that looks like when it's sitting on a shelf. A professional designer can help coax ideas out into the open and turn them in to a real-life package. Every coffee company wants their product to get into the kitchens and cups of consumers who will enjoy it. They have done the work to make a great product and to get the product in front of them. Now, consumers need to choose to buy it. A package's function and its design have the power to make them look. And when they finally reach out, take the product (and begin down the road to enjoying coffee), it may be the packaging that "has made all the difference."
