Ginger, chili powder may decrease cancer risk WASHINGTON, DC—Ingesting 6-gingergol (ginger) and capsaicin (chili powder) may decrease your risk of cancer, according to study results published in the November 2016 issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. Researchers fed mice either 6-gingerol, capsaicin, or both for 20 weeks. While 70 percent of the control group developed cancer, all of the mice fed only capsaicin—which previous studies have linked with cancerous effects—developed lung carcinomas. However, only half of the mice fed 6- gingerol developed cancer and only 20 percent of the mice given both com- pounds developed cancer. Both 6-gin- gerol and capsaicin bind to the same cellular receptor related to tumor growth, which may explain the seem- ingly contradictory results of the study.
