Tablets & Capsules January 2017 39 tablet is as easy as "loading a different recipe," DeVries said. Because Amway packages in 11 bottle sizes, the lines were built to change over in 1 hour. To make that possible, no tools are needed for the change parts. Plus, the line includes fixed scales on all adjustable guides and uses preloaded recipes. Four people operate each line, with each person in one of four zones: 1) filler and x-ray, 2) laser coder and labeler, 3) case packer and manual pal- letizing, and 4) material handling. The line's j-shaped layout allows operators to communicate easily, and the main- line HMI sits at the center with a view of the filler. Not long ago, Amway decided to consolidate the company's packaging operations, and the lines were re- moved, crated, and shipped to a facil- ity in Buena Park, CA. One of the lines is installed, qualified, and vali- dated, and the other will be installed shortly. In the meantime, DeVries helped install two packaging lines at a site in India, which are smaller and not as automated. IMA also supplied those fillers and helped integrate them.
