Elliott first moved to oust Burgmans in April, when the firm reportedly owned only a 3.25 percent stake in the coatings company. Elliott was dissatisfied with AkzoNobel's unwillingness to go to the bargaining table with PPG. Elliott then began litigation regarding the com- pany's duties to its shareholders. Dur- ing this period, Elliott became the Dutch paint company's largest share- holder, holding 9 percent of the com- pany. Both entities have agreed to sus- pend all ongoing litigation for at least three months, assuming the terms of a standstill agreement are met. Storm damage plagues Texas CROSBY, Tex.—Hurricane Harvey has left massive damage in its wake, in- cluding at an Arkema chemical plant in Crosby, Tex., where a series of explo- sions were triggered by organic perox- ides used in paints and coatings. The plant, which produces liquid organic peroxides used in acrylic resins as well as PVC, fiberglass, and other products, lost power and both sources of backup generator power. The result was a lack of critical refrigeration, which inevitably lead to explosions involving the perox- ides, which must be refrigerated in order to remain stable. Arkema was in agreement with local public officials that letting the fire burn itself out was the best approach to the situation, as organic peroxides are ex- tremely flammable. Chemical vapors released into the air were not dangerous to people, though some could be irri- tated by the smoke. SSPC: The Society for Protective Coat- ings is encouraging its members to do- nate to any of a number of organizations that are providing relief in the region af- fected by the storm. The organization has provided a list of groups suggested by family, friends and members, along with links to make donating easy.
