ACTIVITIES: Shopping
FASHION CAPITAL OF THE NORTH
Have you checked out what Alaskans are wearing? We tend to keep it pretty casual, but we do it with style. Locals typically choose items that'll look great through any adventure, whether that
means flashy rubber boots, the perfect flannel shirt or a down-filled skirt that's cute and waterproof. If you need something specific to wear for your Alaska adventures, don't worry — many retailers rent gear.
HOMETOWN FAVORITES
We also love to shop local, and we hope you will too: look for locally designed
t-shirts, salmon-skin wallets, and qiviut hats made with musk ox wool (it's one of the softest, warmest fibers available).
These labels help you know exactly where your purchase comes from.
TAKE IT WITH YOU
Food
Fish: Have your catch filleted and frozen for travel – then carry it on your flight.
Birch or Spruce Tip Syrup Harvested from trees just like maple syrup, though not as sweet. Use them for cooking.
Fireweed Honey Steeped with fresh fireweed blooms, this honey has rich
flavor and smooth texture.
Alaska inspires artists, as you'll see in galleries around the state. Alaska Native art, such as masks, woven baskets, handcarved baleen and (walrus or mastodon) ivory, and Yupik dolls,
make souvenirs with a story — the very best kind. Note: Harvesting ivory is legal
for Alaska Natives, who use the entire animal as part of their subsistence lifestyle. Look for the Silver Hand symbol.
Gorgeous jewelry options include silver jewelry with Tlingit and Haida carvings,
and Athabascan porcupine quill jewelry.
