KETCHIKAN Discover Alaska Native heritage and see world-famous totems in this postcard-pretty town. Or stroll Creek Street and browse its shops and waterfront restaurants. Need more? Go adventuring! Take a zipline tour above the lush forest, or dive in for an unusual near-coast snorkeling trip. JUNEAU In Alaska's modern capital, you can take a tram to the top of Mount Roberts, museum hop, or view world-class Alaska Native artwork at the Walter Soboleff Building. Adventures and natural wonders, like the icy blue Mendenhall Glacier, flightseeing and dogsled tours, are plentiful too. GUSTAVUS A picturesque place with style all its own, Gustavus is the gateway to Glacier Bay National Park. Walk the town to view the beautiful surroundings (and peek at locals' gardens). Then explore the antiques on display at the Petroleum Museum or Bartlett Cove to stroll the trails. SITKA This history-rich town (22 locations on the National Register of Historic Places!) is an Alaska influence mash-up. See St. Michael's Russian Orthodox Cathedral's onion dome, the totems at Sitka National Historic Park, the art at a local gallery — then stroll a trail lined with Sitka spruce. SKAGWAY Miners seeking Klondike riches launched from Skagway during the Gold Rush. Shades of 1898 linger here in old-fashioned boardwalks and frontier-style storefronts. Take the White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad to explore the gorgeous landscape — and to see how daunting those miners' journeys were.
