NOME
Nome, on the Norton Sound, is famous for gold mining, dog mushing (it's the end of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race) and is the headquarters for the Bering Land Bridge National Preserve. Stop
by the Carrie M. McLain Memorial Museum to learn about all three.
KOTZEBUE
Head to Kotzebue to explore remote parks such as Cape Krusenstern
National Monument, Kobuk Valley National Park, Noatak National Preserve
and the world-class rafting rivers eading from the Brooks Range to the Chukchi Sea. Learn more about Alaska Native history at the Northwest Arctic
Heritage Center.
UTQIAĠVIK (Barrow)
Come and dip your toe in the Arctic Ocean, if you dare. The Inupiat community of Utqiaġvik is the northernmost settlement in America and the largest city in the Arctic. This far north, the summer sun doesn't set for 82 days.
COLDFOOT
Legend says that Coldfoot was named for would-be gold-rushers who got this far and turned back. Today, it's one of the few road-accessible communities north of the Arctic Circle, and a stopping point for drivers touring the Dalton
Highway and truckers heading to the oil fields of Prudhoe Bay.
BETTLES
Bettles/Evansville consists of two villages with about 30 residents each. Though small in size, it's the major departure point to many great adventures in the Gates of the Arctic National Park, Kobuk Valley
National Park and Kanuti National Wildlife Refuge.
