INDUSTRY NEWS Evonik opens 3D printing technology center in Austin, TX Evonik Industries AG, a specialty chemical company headquartered in Essen, Germany, has opened a new technology center for 3D print- ing in Austin, TX. The new US site for additive manufacturing (AM) will play a key role in the global innovation network that will seek to develop new, ready-to-use mate- rials for powder-bed fusion. The center is called the Center for Struc- tured Polymers Technology. The center includes an applica- tion technology laboratory with 3D printers and a processing area, a research and development labo- ratory, production rooms, of ces, and meeting rooms. According to Vikram Devarajan, managing direc- tor of the center, "By expanding our capabilities in North America, we are sending an important signal to our partners in the region that we can now better support them with new technological opportunities in materials development right in their own backyard." In 2019, Evonik purchased Struc- tured Polymers Inc., a US-based startup for 3D printing materials. The acquisition followed an initial investment period through Evonik's venture capital unit. Evonik was then able to access a new patented technology with the aim of expand- ing the existing product portfolio in special polymer powders for AM. Evonik already produced polyam- ide 12 powders, which have been used for AM for two decades.
