This article covers the replacement of the oil pan gasket on a D17 gas tractor. The D17 gas tractor is one of the most reliable tractors ever manufactured, giving the most hours of performance in the field per hour of repair. On the D17, the best way to replace the pan gasket is to roll the front end away from the engine and the tractor. How to replace a D17 gas tractor oil pan gasket After the whole oil pan is exposed, remove all the bolts holding pan to engine block. Carefully tap side of pan to separate the pan from the engine block. Clean gasket surface on the bottom of engine block. Be sure to remove all old gasket material from the end gasket grooves and the end gasket corners. Clean pan to remove all oil residue and old gasket material. Ensure the corners of the pan are in good shape and silver soldier intact. The gap at the ends between the silver soldier corners should not exceed 4.875 inches. If this measurement is not met, replace the oil pan or build up corners with silver soldier back to the specification. Disconnect battery. Drain engine oil and coolant. Use stands to support each frame rail. Support torque tube with blocking and jacks securely. Chock rear tires in front and back. Remove bolts holding frame rails to torque tube. Remove hoods and center hood strip. Disconnect any power steering lines that connect the engine and the front support gearbox. Roll front end of tractor away from rear end until a gap of 1-2 feet is achieved. This will give enough clearance to remove and install the oil pan.
