STEP 5: After ensuring the flatness of both head and manifold, assemble the manifold gasket set to the manifold. Manifold gasket set is A-C p/n 229958. The steel retainers cup the fiber gaskets and the ends of the manifold ports. I recommend the "sandwich" method of installing the gaskets. Using Permatex Max Temp Red gasket maker, apply a thin bead to the end of each of the manifold ports. Then, place the fiber gaskets on the red Permatex, on the manifold port ends. Now apply another thin bead of red Permatex on the gaskets. Then, place the metal retainers down on the gaskets with Permatex. This helps two ways: It keeps the gaskets in place while positioning the manifold on the head AND helps seal up slight uneven surfaces on the head or manifold. STEP 6: Apply another thin bead of red Permatex to the top of the steel gasket retainers glued to the manifold or around the ports on the cylinders head. STEP 7: Gently guide the manifold with gaskets onto the studs in the cylinder head, being careful not to knock the gaskets or retainers out of place. Using flat washers under the nuts, tighten nuts down on the manifold studs by hand evenly until there is no gap between any of the manifold ports and the head. Let the manifold sit for an hour to allow the Permatex to tack up. Then, torque the nuts evenly on the studs, going across the studs in several cycles until the nuts hold the torque. Consult your Allis-Chalmers service manual for the tractor for the torque specs. If you don't own a service manual, buy one or borrow one. STEP 8: Let the Permatex dry overnight and connect the carburetor, muffler and battery. Run the tractor up to operating temperature, shut off and allow to cool back down. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART: Then, re-torque the manifold nuts back up to the spec. Keep cycling through the nuts until they are again holding their torque. After each next tractor operating cycle, keep re-torquing the manifold nuts until they are holding their torque. You may have to repeat the re-torqing of nuts after operating the tractor five times until the nuts maintain their torque. This ensures the longest life possible out of the manifold gaskets. 11 OLD ALLIS NEWS
