The first factor is that we are still a traditional market, and I think that the traditional dealer, with all due respect, is still clinging to the old ways of doing business. I don't believe there's such a thing as traditional dealer anymore. There are tra- ditional values. There's traditional culture and traditional service, but a traditional way of operating your business…we've got to evolve past that and understand that we're in a market that is dynamically changing and we have to change with it. The other component is we're still a very family-operated industry. The indus- tries that we see adopting the technol- ogy more quickly are bigger companies, companies that have bigger dollars behind it. They're not your family busi- nesses that are emotionally tied to every dollar they spend. Lastly, I think our industry struggles with technology because of availability. Even if you want to move forward, the technology may not be readily available. N&V: For example? Burkett: One example that definitely is a challenge is LTL shipments. We sell a lot of heavy equipment in our industry that goes on trucking carriers. The tech- nology isn't readily available to allow that type of integration with ecommerce websites (to be able to accurately cal- culate that type of shipping cost in real time). You can come up with a rule of thumb that says x dollars per pound, but you don't have LTL freight-type technol- ogy readily available for the industry. The other technology, barcoding, is just starting to come around in our industry and many suppliers still don't barcode their inventory. In more devel- oped industries, like automotive and electronics, barcoding has been around for 20 years. Today, I'd say that 80 per- cent of suppliers do it, but we still have 20 percent that do not barcode. That adds a big burden on the business. More and more people that I talk to are using the Cloud-- not to its fullest extent-- but they're definitely using it for pro- ductivity tools like Microsoft Office, Google Drive, or Google apps.
