1993 Great Midwest Champions First Ever NCAA Tournament Appearance First Ever NCAA Tournament Appearance The 1993 team became the first Memphis squad to earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers won the Great Midwest Conference Tournament in Memphis to claim the automatic bid by beating UAB (2-1), Marquette (2-1) and Saint Louis (1-0). The Tigers lost at Indiana in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, 6-0. Former Memphis head coach Chris Bartels (1988-98) led the team to its second conference tournament championship.
