Charlie Musselwhite & The North Mississippi Allstars Thursday, Feb. 18 Golden State Theatre, Monterey W hen it comes to blues harmonica, Charlie Musselwhite is one of the few true masters left still playing. One of the few non-black blues musicians to become a star dur- ing the emergence of electric blues in '60s Chicago, Musselwhite released one of the semi- nal albums of that era, 1967's "Stand Back! Here Comes Charley Musselwhite's Southside Band." He inspired Dan Aykroyd to create his Blues Brothers character, was close friends with John Lee Hooker, has won 14 W. C. Handy Awards and numerous Grammys and Blues Music Awards. He's recorded with a diverse group of artists, including Cyndi Lauper, Tom Waits, INXS, Ben Harper and Bonnie Raitt. And at age 71, he's not only still touring and recording, he's as vital as ever. This time around he's playing with one of the best young blues bands in the coun- try, the North Mississippi Allstars. www.goldenstatetheatre.com. Classic Albums Live Performs Jimi Hendrix's "Are You Experienced" Friday, Feb. 19 Sunset Center, Carmel I t's considered one of the greatest albums of all time, certainly one of the greatest debut albums in rock history. Jimi Hendrix Experience's 1967 classic "Are You Experi- enced" spent 33 weeks on the charts, peaked at number two, and contained four of rock's best songs, "Purple Haze," "Foxy Lady," "Hey Joe" and "The Wind Cries Mary." Classic Albums Live, a Toronto, Canada-based concert ser- ies, presents the album in its entirety, plus a few more greatest hits after the album. It features a band of sea- soned musicians headed by veteran guitarist and com- poser Clifton David Broad- bridge, currently producing, writing and mixing an album of classic and psychedelic rock for Beatles' pro- ducer George Mar tin's Grand Master Production Music. Presented by Beacon House. www.sunsetcenter.org. Hooking Up with The Second City Wednesday, Feb. 24 Sunset Center, Carmel T ina Fey, Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, Joan Rivers, Chris Farley, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray, Mike Myers, John Candy, Dan Aykroyd. They all have one thing in common, the influen- tial Chicago and Toronto-based improvisational comedy troupe, The Second City. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Hundreds more have gone through the troupe and gone on to big things. Just ask "Saturday Night Live," which seems almost like a graduate school for mem- bers of the troupe. The Second City brings its popular and hilarious improvisational touring revue to Carmel again. And it's celebrating its 56th year of providing belly laughs to the country. www.sunsetcenter.org.
