It still has Dixieland music at its core, but it also offers trad jazz, ragtime, swing, gypsy jazz, zydeco and blues. Featured bands this year include Royal Society Jazz Orchestra, Uptown Lowdown Jazz Band, Titan Hot Seven, Tom Rigney & Flambeau and Carl Sonny Leyland Trio. Peter Frampton Raw— An Acoustic Tour Tuesday, March 15 Sunset Center, Carmel B ack in the late '70s it seemed like everyone, from college co- eds and pimply teens in their bed- rooms to suburban moms, owned and incessantly played Peter Frampton's irresistible 1976 live album "Frampton Comes Alive!" I mean, who could resist ear candy like "Show Me the Way," "Baby, I Love Your Way," and "Do You Feel Like We Do" and those weird but cool talk box-enhanced vocals? Frampton's had his ups and downs since then, but now he's embarked on his first-ever solo acoustic tour with Gordon Kennedy, his longtime collaborator and co-producer of his Grammy Award-winning album "Fingerprints," and his son, singer and guitarist Julian Frampton. Jackie Greene Band Saturday, March 19 Golden State Theatre, Monterey S inger, songwriter and gui- tarist Jackie Greene has deep roots in Monterey County. Bor n in Salinas, Greene has built up a strong local following with scintillating performances in the area, including at the Monterey Bay Blues Festival. Since his award-winning 2002 debut "Gone Wanderin'," Greene has recorded eight solo albums, performed and toured with the Black Crowes, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead, Levon Helm and in the super- group Trigger Hippy, along with Joan Osborne and Crowes' drummer Steve Gorman. His latest solo project, "Back To Birth," was named one of Americana Music Association's top albums of 2015. www.goldenstatetheatre.com. Pacific Grove Good Old Days April 9-10 Downtown Pacific Grove I t started out as a homey, small-town celebra- tion with parades, pancake breakfasts, food booths, arts & crafts, carnival rides, classic car show, pony rides and the like. It's still all that, but now it's one of the best, and certainly the biggest, music festivals on the Central Coast. The street party includes 60 bands, ranging from classic rock and country to jazz and Latin, all headlined by Bay Area alt rock jam band Moonalice. And here's the kicker : it's all free! www.pacificgrove.org/events. 45th Annual Next Generation Jazz Festival April 8-10 Monterey Conference Center and Portola Plaza Hotel & Spa, Monterey I f the Monterey Jazz Festival is the greatest jazz festival in the world, in my humble opinion at least, then it should stand to reason that the MJF's Next Generation Jazz Festival is the greatest student jazz competi- tion in the world. With more than 1,300 of the country's top student musicians, including middle, high school and col- legiate talent, competing every year in big bands, small combos, vocal ensembles, as well as con- glomerate bands from various schools, this is truly the Super Bowl or World Series of student jazz competitions.
