8 April 2017 Tablets & Capsules research Capsule powered by stomach fluid can run sensors, deliver APIs CAMBRIDGE, MA—Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Brigham and Women's Hospital developed a cap- sule that uses stomach acid to power sensors and can remain in the gas- trointestinal tract for extended peri- ods. The capsule has external zinc and copper electrodes that react with stomach acid to generate electricity and power small sensors that can monitor vital signs and deliver APIs. In tests on pigs, the capsules took 6 days on average to travel through the digestive tract. The device could be useful in experiments that deliver dif- ferent doses of APIs. An article about the capsule study appears in the February issue of Nature Biomedical Engineering. markets Report forecasts 6.6 percent annual growth in outsourcing market NEW YORK, NY—Outsourced manufacturing is the fastest growing sector of the pharmaceutical market, growing at a rate of 6.6 percent per year, according to a report from Results Healthcare.
