Tablets & Capsules July 2017 32E nutra news Probiotics may relieve IBS-related depression, study finds HAMILTON, ON, Canada—Probiotics may relieve symptoms of depression in patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), according to researchers at McMaster University. A 10-week study followed 44 adult patients with IBS and mild to moderate anxiety and/or depression who were assigned to take a daily dose of a probiotic (bifi- dobacterium longum NCC3001) or a placebo. The results show that 14 of 22 patients in the probiotic group reported improvement from co-existing depression while only seven in the placebo group reported the same. The study was published in the May 2017 issue of Gastroenterology.
