HRO Today Forum Europe Preview What's Mine is Yours Job sharing can promote happy employees, talent retention, and other valuable benefits. By Sara Hill The world of work is changing. By 2020, most baby boomers will have retired, and Generation Y will dominate employment, comprising 42 per cent of the workforce. For many of these tech savvy workers—currently between the ages of 18 and 32—part-time, flexible, and freelance work is the norm. If organisations want to retain their highly sought skills, they need to open their eyes and move away from traditional full-time employment expectations. Part-time working has often been pigeonholed as a female issue, specifically centred around working moms. Indeed, there is considerable demand for flexible and part-time options amongst this group. Perhaps surprisingly, however, [12] HRO TODAY GLOBAL | AUTUMN 2013 as part-time recruitment specialists, we have identified a considerable demand from men too. We collated data from a number of job share and flexible working implementation programmes within global organisations. We found that 30 per cent of applications for part-time and job sharing opportunities were from men, often in senior highly pressurised roles that kept them away from home for long periods.
