The Tigers opened the 1987 campaign with a 16-10 win over Ole Miss and then stunned the college football world by upsetting 15th-ranked Alabama 13-10 in the Liberty Bowl. The Tiger defense held Alabama to 95 yards of total offense in the second half as Memphis State rallied to defeat the Crimson Tide with 10 points in the final half. Fullback Wayne Pryor led the Tigers with 112 yards rushing on 19 carries and the Tiger defense held Bobby Humphrey, Alabama's Heisman Trophy candidate, to only 84 yards on 22 carries.
